TAPELINE CARE AND USAGE TIPS

When retrieving the tapeline, start turning the handle slowly for the first couple of turns before accelerating to full speed. This will extend the life of the reel and handle. Trying to operate the return of the tapeline smoothly, without abrupt or rough motions, can add years to its usefulness.

As the tape nears being completely into the case or reel, slow down so the tape end doesn't "whip", which puts stress on the tape near the hook, which is where most tapeline breaks occur. Both steel and fiberglass will fail if bent back and forth repeatedly by allowing them to whip.

Occasional careful washing of the tape will extend its service life.

Pull moderately when taking measurements, especially with fiberglass tapelines because they can stretch if pulled too hard (they will return to their original length when you stop pulling on them, but your measurements may be off).
